History of The Trust Fund
In 1970, when the Woman’s Medical College became the co-educational Medical College of Pennsylvania, the alumnae of WMC sought a mechanism to preserve the special legacy of WMC with regard to the education of women. The Trust Fund of the Alumnae Association of the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania had its start in March 1971 with money raised in a special appeal and donated by the Alumnae Association. The donors specified the following: “This trust is created and shall be operated exclusively for charitable, scientific or educational purposes in connection with, and in furtherance of, the education of women at the Medical College of Pennsylvania.”
There have been many significant changes at the medical school over the ensuing years — the merger with Hahnemann University, the formation and subsequent bankruptcy of Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, and finally, the merger with Drexel University in 2002 to form the Drexel University College of Medicine.
The Trust Fund has remained strong and viable through it all. Our investments have been and continue to be safe, secure, and well stewarded at all times. The only changes were the renaming of the Trust Fund in 1998 to the Trust Fund of the Alumnae/i Association of WMC/MCP to better reflect our history, and in 2003, the achievement of full independence from the Alumni Association. The Trust Fund exists today as an independent organization whose mission continues to be supporting and advancing the education and professional development of women at our medical school.
